Now for the tutorial....
This is what we will be making! Mijn Bonte Kip.....that's Dutch for My Colorfull Chicken...LOL!
This time of year you find so many fun things for Easter,
and I did see this chicken made of wood...so many wood things in our stores...great!
I never have made a chicken before and just thought I would give it a try!
I think it's cute!
I did use the jpeg optimizer for faster loading, so the images do look a bit weird, sorry.

It is assumed that you have a good working knowledge of PSP.
This tutorial uses vector shapes.
It isn't really difficult and you can save it as a preset shape as well as a tube.
You can find on my other Tutorials how to save it as a shape.

  • PSP 7      download a free trial version.....and I'm sure you will have lots of fun.

    The tools I used:

Preset Shapes   Object Selector   Selection Tool  Retouch tool
     Layer Visibility Toggle
     Air Brush  Dropper  Draw tool

Let's try to make the Bonte Kip!......hope you have fun!
Open up a transparent image size around 800 x 700  16 million colours (24 bit).
I know it's a bit large, I need a lot of space...LOL, make it smaller if you like
for example 600 x 500.
Don't forget to save as you go along.

*note* I did save it as a preset shape first....before promoting to layers.
Make all parts on a separate layer and name them too,
so then you will know what it is *s*.

Add a new Vector Layer
Click on the Preset Shapes set to circle,
foreground set to null, background any color you like the body to be.
Edit the nodes as shown. Save!
Add a new Vector Layer
Use the same settings but a different color for the wing.
Edit this too as shown. Save!
Add a new Vector Layer
We are going to make the tail??....do chickens have a tail????
Well for me it's a tail....LOL...same settings only now choose a gradient
or make your own gradient by using the fore and background colors,
set the angle 90, edit the nodes as shown, Save!
Add a new Vector Layer
again same settings, make or use a different gradient
set the angle to 0,and now we will make the neck and head.
Edit the nodes as shown. Save!
Add a new Vector Layer
same settings and choose a red color for what we are going to make....
don't know what to name it.....so I use the dutch word "kwab"....LOL...
shape it as shown. Save!
This is what we have so far!
Add a new Vector Layer
now for the cheaks and eyes, make 3 circles,
1 large with a color you like the cheaks to be,
1 white and the black for the inside eye. Try to make it as shown in the sample. Save!
Add a new Vector Layer
Set the preset shape to rectangle and a yellow color, draw and edit as shown. This layer should be under the head layer. Save!
Add a new Vector Layer
For the red thing on a chickens head....hahaha (don't know the name again)
we use the same settings only the red color of the "kwab"...LOL...edit as shown. Save!
Add a new Vector Layer
I made sort of feathers...for the tail. First I made a gradient again, angle set to 90 and used a bit darker colors, shape and edit as shown.
Save!
Add a new Vector Layer
We are almost there.....LOL....chicken do have legs!
Now you can do them as you like by drawing freehand with a yellow color (same as the beak)
or preset shape set to rectangle and edit the nodes as shown. Duplicate for the second leg....and you are done with all the shapes needed!
This is how my layers look like now.
Arrange them as shown in the sample.
This is what we have now.
I'm leaving this up to you how to finish it.
I did save it as a shape before converting.
You can use the cutout, airbrush or darken and lighten tool to give it some depth, so do what you like best.
I hope you did enjoy making the "Bonte Kip" or "Bonte Haan"....which is the dutch word for "Rooster"....LOL
