Now for the tutorial....
This is what we will be making! My Cartoon Doll.
It is assumed that you have a good working knowledge of PSP.

  • PSP 7      download a free trial version.....and I'm sure you will have lots of fun.

The tools I used:

Preset Shapes   Object Selector   Selection Tool  Retouch tool
 Layer Visibility Toggle
 Air Brush  Dropper  Draw tool

Let's go and make the Doll!......hope you have fun!
Open up a transparent image size around 350 x 700  16 million colours (24 bit).
Don't forget to save as you go along.
*note* I did save it as a preset shape first....before promoting to layers.

These are the colors I used, but feel free to use others if you wish.

Click on the Preset Shapes and settings as shown, choose the two skincolors from the color palette.
First we are going to make the body, even though we won't see much of it...LOL!
Draw a oval shape and edit the nodes until it looks something like this.
Add a new Vector Layer
use the same settings as for the body, and make the head.
The head is a bit large....LOL....but I liked it that way!

I hope you did ....SAVE!
Add a new Vector Layer
again same settings, and now we will make some arms.
For the right arm, we just right click with the mouse and click copy, then right click again and choose paste as new vector selection. Now you can shape the arm as you like. When done drag both arm layers beneath the body layer.....SAVE!
Add a new Vector Layer
use the same settings, and now we will make the legs. Make both legs on a seperate vector layer, and shape them as shown.
Add a new Vector Layer
We are going to make the hair, and beginning with the hair on the back.
Same settings, only no foreground color and I used the second color from the color palette....or choose any you like best. Draw a oval and node edit as if the doll does have curly hair. When done, drag this layer beneath the body layer.....SAVE!
Add a new Vector Layer
use the same settings, make the front hair. This is shorter then the hair on the back. We will get back to this later on in the tutorial.
This is what we have so far. We now will make the face and get her dressed!
Add a new Vector Layer
For the eye use the same shape, only set the foreground color to black and background color to white. Edit the shape as shown.Try to zoom in...it does make it easier to see what you are doing with the nodes. Now change the background color in any color you like the eyes to be and draw a oval. Place it as shown. Then we change the background color to black and no foreground color, draw a oval again, and place it too as shown. When done, copy and paste the same way as we did for the arms....SAVE!
Add a new Vector Layer
Now for the eyelashes, use the drawtool with settings as shown, and draw the eyelashes as you like them.
*note* I did group all the lashes by selecting each layer, then right click and choose group from the menu as shown. I did this so that I could copy the entire group for the other eye. I know there are other ways to get the same result, but I did choose to do it this way as it is more complete for me. You can also draw the lashes when all is converted, so do as you wish.
Add a new Vector Layer
for the lips, set the foreground color to null and background to any color you would like the lips to be...I did choose a nice red and using the preset shapes set to ellipse, now draw a oval and node edit as shown. The lips are half way the bottom of the head....SAVE!
Add a new Vector Layer
for the nose I used the drawtool set to "Bezier curve" and used a darker skin color, draw just a small line and edit as shown in the example.
Add a new Vector Layer
for the eyebrow, you can use the preset shapes, rectangle and ellipse...and I did choose the ellipse and choose any color you like for the eyebrow.....I had mine black...changed that later when they where converted. No foreground color only background. When done copy and paste as we have done before.....SAVE!
Add a new Vector Layer
preset shapes set to ellipse color pink and draw 2 pink cheaks.
Add a new Vector Layer
We will get this poor girl dressed LOL, so we make the shirt first.
Use same settings, only foreground color to lightgrey and background set to white, node edit as shown.....SAVE!
Add a new Vector Layer
The collar for the shirt.
Use same settings only now use rectangle and edit the collar of the shirt as shown.
Add a new Vector Layer
The skirt. Use the same settings, only foreground set to null and background any color you like the skirt to be, and edit the skirt as shown.....SAVE!
Add a new Vector Layer
The blazer. Use the same settings only now use ellipse and edit as shown. For the other side copy and paste as before, and shape it aswell.
Add a new Vector Layer
For the collar of the blazer, use the same settings and edit as shown. Copy and paste this one too, and shape it a bit......SAVE!
yes we are almost done.....we do need a break...LOL!
Add a new Vector Layer
The poor girl also needs some shoes, now use same settings and edit as shown. For the other side copy and paste too.
Yep....we are done with all the shapes needed.....that was hard work, wasn't it!!! LOL...or maybe not for a few....just kidding!
For the finishing touch, we will go to the next page......after a break!!

going to the next page!
